Jaggery vs sugar: is it actually healthier?
Jaggery (gur) wears a wholesome, traditional halo, while refined sugar is cast as the villain. Nutritionally, how different are they really? An honest myth-check.

For all its earthy colour and trace minerals, jaggery is still around 97% sugar, and your body treats most of it just like sugar.
It feels healthier. Jaggery is golden and unrefined, it comes from the village and the harvest, it flavours the sweets of every festival. Surely a spoon of gur is a world away from white sugar? The honest answer is: less than the halo suggests.
What jaggery actually is
Jaggery is concentrated sugarcane (or palm) juice, boiled down and set without refining out the molasses. That retained molasses is where its colour, its deep flavour, and its trace minerals, some iron, potassium and magnesium, come from.
The kernel of truth
Compared with fully refined white sugar, which is essentially pure sucrose and nothing else, jaggery genuinely does carry small amounts of minerals and antioxidants. It is a less-processed sweetener with more character. That part of the story is real.
The honest reality
But it is still around 97% sugar. The mineral amounts are tiny relative to how much jaggery you would actually eat, you cannot meet your iron needs from a sweetener without a dangerous amount of sugar. And it is glycaemically similar to sugar: it still raises blood glucose and still counts for people managing diabetes.1
So what is the verdict
Jaggery is a marginally better, more flavourful choice than white sugar, and its flavour may help you use a little less. But it is not a health food, and the "iron tonic" and "detox" claims are not supported. The single thing that matters most is the same for both: the total amount.

"Jaggery detoxes" or "cures anaemia" oversell trace minerals, treat it as a nicer sugar.
